About GlueTread Repairs
Does GlueTread work on sidewall damage?
Yes. GlueTread is designed specifically to repair sidewall damage, including cuts, slices, and punctures.
Traditional plugs and patches don’t hold well on the sidewall because it flexes constantly. GlueTread repairs are applied from the outside and built to handle that movement.
As long as the tire isn’t completely destroyed or blown out, GlueTread repairs are designed to seal the damage and keep you moving.
How strong is a GlueTread repair?
GlueTread patches are rated up to 40 PSI. The adhesive bonds the patch directly to the rubber of your tire, creating a bond similar to vulcanization.
Strength depends on proper prep and the size of the damage, but in most cases, the repair holds far better than people expect. We’ve even had people try to pull bonded rubber apart at trade shows, and they can’t.
We’ve got videos showing just how strong these repairs are on our Instagram.
How long does a GlueTread repair last?
It depends on the damage and how the tire is used, but many GlueTread repairs last much longer than expected.
GlueTread is designed as a temporary repair to get you out of trouble, but many customers report getting thousands of miles or even years out of a properly applied patch.
When applied correctly, the repair creates a durable bond that can hold up through continued use.
Note: GlueTread repairs are intended for off-road and emergency use to get you back to safety.
Is there enough adhesive included in the kit?
Yes. GlueTread kits include enough adhesive to complete multiple repairs when applied correctly.
Using more adhesive does not make the repair stronger, which is why following the application instructions is important.
If you ever run out of adhesive or receive a dried tube, contact our support team and we’ll replace it free of charge.
What is the shelf life of GlueTread adhesive?
GlueTread adhesive has an extended shelf life thanks to updated aluminum tubing and improved packaging. After additional testing, the shelf life was extended from two years to four years when stored properly.
To maximize shelf life, store the adhesive in a cool, dry place with the cap sealed tightly after use.
If your adhesive ever dries out, contact our support team and we’ll replace it free of charge. You can also read more about the updated adhesive formula and extended shelf life on our blog.
Can GlueTread be used on trucks, ATVs, or tractors?
Yes, GlueTread can be used on any tubeless tire, including trucks, ATVs, UTVs, tractors, and more.
Different kits are designed for different applications, but the repair process and rubber are the same. Whether you’re dealing with a sidewall cut, a puncture, or a valve stem issue, GlueTread systems are built to handle the most common types of tire damage across vehicles.
We’ve seen this used in all kinds of situations. For example, our friends at Farm4Profit used our SxS kit to repair a tractor tire and keep working without downtime. It’s a good example of how this works beyond just off-road use.
Can the Snowmobile Kit repair both the track and the paddles?
The Snowmobile Kit is designed to repair split or torn paddles on a snowmobile track. It is not intended to repair structural damage to the track itself.
Tire Problems & Quick Fixes
My tire has a slow leak — what can I do to fix it temporarily?
A slow leak is usually caused by one of three things: a small puncture in the tread, a damaged sidewall, or a bad valve stem.
Start by finding the source of the leak. If it’s a puncture, you can plug it to stop the air loss. If the valve stem is the issue, replacing it can fix the problem quickly.
If the leak is coming from a cut or damage to the tire, a GlueTread repair can seal it and keep you moving. GlueTread systems are designed to handle all three of these common issues—tread punctures, sidewall damage, and valve stem failures—so you’re not stuck guessing what to do next.
The goal with a slow leak is to stop the air loss long enough to get back to safety without having to constantly refill the tire.
What causes tire sidewall damage?
Sidewall damage is usually caused by impact or contact with something sharp.
Common causes include hitting rocks, roots, or debris on the trail, rubbing against obstacles, or driving on a tire that’s underinflated. Tractor tires can also develop sidewall cracks or splits over time, which is another common type of damage.
Sidewall damage is different from tread punctures or valve stem issues because that part of the tire is always moving. That’s why most traditional repair methods don’t hold there.
GlueTread is designed specifically for that flexing area, so it can handle damage that other methods struggle with.
GlueTread systems are built to handle all three of these common problems—tread punctures, sidewall damage, and valve stem failures—so you’re prepared no matter what caused the issue.
Can I fix a tire instead of replacing it?
In many cases, yes. It depends on where the damage is and how severe it is.
Small punctures in the tread can usually be plugged, and many cuts or slices can be sealed using a GlueTread repair system. Valve stem issues can also be fixed without replacing the entire tire.
If the tire is blown out, shredded, or the internal structure is damaged, it’s time to replace it. But for a lot of common issues, a repair can get you back on the road or trail without needing a new tire right away.
What’s the best way to handle a tire emergency on the trail?
Most tire problems can be handled if you’ve got the right gear with you.
Find the damage and remove whatever caused it. If it’s a puncture, plug it. If it’s a cut or sidewall damage, apply a GlueTread patch. If the valve stem is the issue, replace it. Then reinflate the tire and make sure the repair is holding before you drive.
The biggest difference-maker is being prepared ahead of time. Having a setup that can handle tread punctures, sidewall damage, and valve stem issues means you’re ready for the most common problems you’ll run into off-road.
What if my GlueTread patch leaks after I put it on?
Most leaking patches are caused by prep issues during installation.
One common mistake is using too much adhesive. GlueTread adhesive should be applied in a dot pattern on one surface only. Using extra adhesive does not make the repair stronger and can actually weaken the bond.
Another common issue is overheating the tire during prep. If a power tool gets the rubber too hot, it can change the surface of the tire and prevent the adhesive from bonding correctly. If the tire becomes hot to the touch while sanding, let it cool completely before applying the patch.
Proper prep is the key to a successful repair. Make sure the surface is flat, clean, and fully sanded before installation.
Off-Road Tire Repair
What should I carry for tire repair on an off-road trip?
If you’re heading off-road, you should carry a basic tire repair setup so you don’t get stranded.
At a minimum, bring:
- A plug kit for punctures
- A sidewall repair solution like GlueTread products for cuts or slices
- A portable air compressor or CO2 to reinflate your tire
- A tire pressure gauge
- Basic tools like pliers to remove debris
If you’ve got the space, it’s also smart to bring a full-size spare, jack, and lug wrench.
Most people only carry a plug kit, but sidewall damage is common off-road. Having a way to handle both punctures and sidewall cuts, like the SxS Pro Kit, can make the difference between driving out and being stuck miles from help.
You can see real-world repairs and what to carry in action on our Instagram.
Can I fix a tire on the trail without a spare?
Yes, in many cases you can fix a tire on the trail without a spare.
GlueTread kits are designed to handle the most common types of tire damage, including tread punctures, sidewall cuts, and valve stem failures, and they include CO2 for reinflation.
As long as the tire isn’t completely destroyed, there’s a good chance you can get it sealed up and back on the trail.
We’ve got real-world examples of these repairs being done out on the trail on our Instagram.
What’s the best tire repair solution for overlanding?
The best tire repair setup for overlanding is one that can handle all the common types of tire damage you might run into.
That means being able to fix tread punctures, sidewall cuts, and valve stem issues, plus having a way to reinflate the tire.
GlueTread kits are built to cover all of that in one system. For example, the GlueTread SxS Pro Kit includes tools for plugs, sidewall repairs, a replacement valve stem, and CO2 cartridges for inflation.
Relying on just a plug kit or just a spare can leave you stuck if the damage doesn’t match what you’re prepared for. A complete setup gives you options and helps keep you moving.
How do you repair a tire in a remote area?
In remote areas, swapping a spare isn’t always easy or even possible. That’s where a repair system like GlueTread comes in.
Here’s the basic process:
- Find the damage and pull out whatever caused it
- If it’s a puncture, plug it
- If it’s a cut or sidewall damage, apply a GlueTread patch
- If the valve stem is damaged, replace it
- Reinflate the tire using CO2 or a compressor
- Make sure the repair is holding before you drive
Most trail repairs are pretty straightforward if you’ve got the right gear with you. The key is being prepared before you head out.

Tire Repair Basics
Can I repair my tire’s sidewall, or do I have to replace the tire?
Yes, in many cases you can repair your tire’s sidewall.
Tire shops usually recommend replacing the tire because standard plugs and patches don’t hold well on the sidewall. GlueTread is designed for that flexing area and can seal cuts or damage up to about four inches long.
If the damage isn’t severe and the tire isn’t blown out, a repair can get you back on the trail without needing to replace the tire right away.

How long does a tire repair last using a patch kit?
A properly repaired tire can last the life of the tire, but that usually applies to tread repairs, not sidewalls.
GlueTread sidewall repairs are designed for emergency situations, but many customers report getting thousands of miles or even the life of the tire after a repair.
How long it lasts depends on the size of the damage and how the tire is used, but when applied correctly, it can hold up far longer than expected.
Note: GlueTread repairs are intended for off-road and emergency use to get you back to safety.
Is it safe to drive on a repaired tire?
GlueTread was designed as an off-road emergency tire repair system to help get you off the trail and back to safety when a spare isn’t an option.
GlueTread repairs are not U.S. Department of Transportation approved and are intended for off-road and emergency use only.
Can GlueTread patches be used inside the tire?
GlueTread patches are designed and intended for use on the outside of the tire.
Some customers choose to apply an additional patch to the inside of the tire for added reinforcement, but GlueTread has not independently tested the patches exclusively for interior use.
If applying a patch inside the tire, make sure the surface is thoroughly cleaned and sanded before installation.
What’s the difference between a plug and a sidewall patch?
A plug and a patch both fix tire damage, but they’re used in different parts of the tire.
A plug is typically used for punctures in the tread. It’s pushed into the hole from the outside to seal it and is commonly used for damage like nails or sharp debris.
A traditional patch is applied from the inside of the tire and usually requires removing the tire from the wheel.
GlueTread sidewall patches are different. They’re applied from the outside of the tire, so you don’t have to remove it from the vehicle. They’re designed to handle sidewall damage that standard plugs and patches won’t fix.
