The Need for Longer Shelf Life
Customer feedback is one of the most important tools we have when it comes to improving our products. Lately, we’ve heard a recurring concern about the shelf-life of our adhesive. While proper storage is always important, we realized it was time to evaluate the packaging itself and see what we could do better on our end.
Until recently, our adhesive came in a small 2-gram plastic bottle. While the formula itself is highly effective and forms a strong chemical bond between the tire and the GlueTread Rubber patch, the packaging didn’t always hold up over time. Many customers reported that after a year or two, the adhesive would begin to harden, even if unopened. That’s a frustrating experience, especially when you’ve invested in a quality kit and want to trust it’ll be ready when you need it most.
So, we made a change.
A Longer-Lasting Adhesive
We have officially transitioned to a 4-gram aluminum tube, and the results speak for themselves. This simple packaging upgrade has increased the shelf-life of our adhesive from roughly 12 months to up to five years! That means more confidence for you, whether you are patching a tire on day one, or day 1,001.
Of course, even with better packaging, storage still matters. To get the most life out of your adhesive, we recommend storing it in a cool, dry place whenever possible. It’s perfectly fine to keep it in your vehicle, but avoiding extreme heat will give it the best chance at lasting longer.
Here’s a quick tip: every few months, give your adhesive a quick check. Flip the tube upside down and look for a small air bubble. If the bubble rises easily to the top, your adhesive is still in good shape and ready to use.
The new aluminum tube isn’t just longer-lasting. It’s also tougher, better sealed, and easier to control during application. Like everything we make, it reflects our commitment to quality, affordability, and American manufacturing.
How Do We Know It Lasts Longer?
To ensure the new packaging truly delivers, we put our adhesive through extensive shelf life testing. Using an environmental chamber, we simulated long-term storage in a compressed timeframe. This process exposed the adhesive to high heat, UV light, and humidity, replicating long-term exposure in just a few weeks. The result? Reliable performance, even after up to five years on the shelf.
Why Aluminum Packaging Matters
The switch from plastic to aluminum isn’t just about durability—it’s about protecting what’s inside.
-
Plastic tubes are slightly permeable, allowing tiny amounts of moisture to seep in over time. This can slowly activate and cure the adhesive before you even open it.
-
Aluminum, on the other hand, is 100% moisture-impermeable. It also blocks UV and visible light, which preserves the adhesive’s chemical stability and slows degradation.
The result? A longer shelf life and more confidence that your adhesive will be ready when you need it.
Expired Adhesive? We'll Replace It
Already have one of our older adhesive bottles? If it’s nearing the expiration date or has already dried up, just let us know. We’ll send you a replacement tube in the new packaging at no cost to you, with no questions asked. It’s a simple policy, but one we’re proud to offer. We want you to feel confident every time you hit the trail.
