On November 6, 2025, we launched The GlueTread Garage, a video series built around the kinds of questions we hear every day:
- What else can GlueTread fix?
- Is GlueTread faster than swapping a spare?
- How do you repair a damaged snowmobile paddle?
“Is GlueTread faster than swapping a spare tire?” is one of those questions that comes up all the time, so we decided to test it.
Quick Answer
In our test, applying a GlueTread patch and swapping a spare tire took the exact same amount of time.
But that’s not the full story!
What We Tested
In this GlueTread Garage episode, we set up a side-by-side comparison:
- One repair: applying a GlueTread sidewall patch
- One repair: swapping a spare tire
Both were tested at the same time so we could see which one finished first.
The result? It was a tie.
Why It Was a Tie
There are a few important details behind that result.
Brian, who was changing the tire, had:
- A perfectly placed jack
- Easy access to the spare
- A controlled garage environment
- Room to move quickly around the vehicle
Chase, applying the GlueTread patch:
- Stayed in one spot
- Completed the repair without needing to reposition the vehicle
Both methods worked. Both got the job done in about the same amount of time.
What This Means on the Trail
This is where things start to shift.
In a garage, everything is set up to make a tire change easy. On a trail, that is rarely the case.
When swapping a spare gets harder:
- Uneven or soft ground
- Limited space to safely use a jack
- Mud, snow, or rocks under the vehicle
- A spare that is buried under gear
When GlueTread has an advantage:
- You can stay right where the damage is
- No need to lift the vehicle
- No need to unload your gear
- Minimal tools required
In those situations, not having to jack up your vehicle can save time and a whole lot of effort.
So… Which One Is Faster?
In perfect conditions, they can take the same amount of time.
In real-world off-road situations, GlueTread is often the simpler and more practical option.
But the better question might not be which one is faster.
Our Recommendation
As Brian put it at the end of the test: Why not carry both?
A spare tire gives you a full replacement. GlueTread gives you a fast, flexible repair when a spare is not practical or not enough.
Having both means you are ready for more than one kind of problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is GlueTread faster than changing a spare tire?
In controlled conditions, both methods can take about the same amount of time. In off-road situations, GlueTread can often be faster because it does not require lifting the vehicle or accessing a spare.
When is it better to use GlueTread instead of a spare?
GlueTread is especially useful when you are on uneven terrain, do not have safe access to a jack, or cannot easily reach your spare tire. It also becomes valuable on longer trips. If you are out for several days and already used your spare, a repair kit gives you another way to keep moving.
Is a GlueTread repair permanent?
GlueTread repairs are designed as a temporary, off-road solution to get you back safely. They are not intended as a permanent or highway-rated repair.
Should you carry both GlueTread and a spare tire?
Yes. Carrying both gives you more flexibility. A spare provides a full replacement, while GlueTread allows for quick repairs when changing a tire is difficult or not possible.
